A view from the top of the roof prior to the next pour. This shows where the 3' parapet will be (left of the blue foam) and the 4' overhang, which will be on top of the blue foam. You can also see some of the pattern of the rebar for the domed roof on the right.

Is the HVAC system for backup or did you find a green solution for the Texas humidity?

Jeff,

The hvac system will be primary and, as you infer, its primary purpose in the summer will be to remove humidity. At this point we are looking at a small compressor (1.5-2 tons) with a 3-4 ton coil to assist with moisture removal. In addition, each room will have a high efficiency (developed by the University of Florida and available at Home Depot) ceiling fan that will be on continually. This will move are enough to prevent condensation.

If you have another idea for humidity control I would love to hear it, since we are used to summer humidity of 20-40%.

I'm originally from East Texas, so I'm used to 50-80%. On top of being slightly less humid, Austin has the advantage of SE summer breezes. I've been trying to find a case where a passive venting system with wing walls and a thermal chimney was used, and to what effect.

Typically southerners just spend a lot of time on the porch. :)
